hey guys!... As far as ideas go for next year I've developed a few that I think will help both the ed-staff and our instructors to be better coaches in the sport. The first idea is in regards to the certification prep. clinics that we run. I've always felt that these clinics have been helpful but it maybe more beneficial to have these clinics shift their on the teaching candidates will encounter in the exam. I'm not suggesting that skiing be completely left out of these clinics but it should be up to the candidate to engage themselves in the other clinics we offer to both broaden their perspective by skiing with other clinicians and by getting them on the snow for more training and mileage on the skis.
The second idea I came up with has to do with video analysis. We all know as an ed-staff as well as ski junkies looking for ways to improve our skiing that video is an indispensable tool. How beneficial would it be to our instructors to have a weekly video group that not only shows the video to those individuals but catalogs and compiles that information for them? The way I foresee this working is that we can save the video files along with some basic information from each night. (Things like weather and snow conditions, the focus for the group, tasks the group attempted, terrain skied, etc.) In this way, it would be possible that at some point in the season,(maybe a week or so before the BM event weekend) we can get CD's to the participants with the video files and information sheets so that they have them as a preparation tool. Also, if the resort would let us, Buena Vista (the building on top of North Bowl) would be a great ski-in/ski-out place to watch video then go out and try to improve upon what everyone has just viewed. This idea would be quite an undertaking and to do it we probably would have to charge a small fee to cover things like the information discs but if we can pull it off I think it would be a huge help to everyone involved.
Let me know what you guys think. Also, If I don't see any of you, have a great off season and enjoy the ski trips I know that most of you are taking.

Cheers!

Never mind Annette, I found it and yes I think a teaching focus would be very helpful. We also talked about the video idea at the end of the year and I think Greg is on to something invaluable if it can be done. Like he said, it will be a lot of work and something that will need to be organized well in advance of the season.
I've also been thinking about recruitment of new instructors and am hoping we can attract more "newbies" for next year. Does BMBW do any recruiting over the summer as far as advertisements go, I have never seen any. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to post "help wanted" ads at various venues that potential ski instructors may frequent over the summer such as bike rallies, skate parks, colleges, high schools (when they restart)etc. Just a thought as I am hoping we get more than 17 new hires next year.

Great idea on recruitment -- maybe Joe Huber can help us get in contact w/ Jodi w/ some of these recruitment ideas-- remember the days when we had a 100 new trainee's?

Hi Ms Annette, regarding Scott's question (which Scott?)concerning recruiting.

In recent years, the ski area has advertised for instructors in their News Letter that goes out before the open house as well as on their website.

The Ski School has had on-going postings at the Ski School office.

Our experience is that the best source for new recruits is "us" the instructors! From our students, customers, friends, aquantences, etc.

We actually had more than 17 new hires.......don't forget to count the new snowboard instructors. Our current list of those interested in being instructors is approx 40 (alpine / snowboard).

Certainly placing an ad in one of the popular "sports" activity magazines, or flyers at bike shops, rec centers, etc. is always good.

If someone is creative, and wants to develop such an advertising piece, have at it! (p.s. I do not know of any $$$$ available for the effort!)

On a seperate note, I just returned from the Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic in Snowmass where I participated as and Adaptive Instructor along with 7 other Instructors from the 3-Trackers program.

There were 170+ instructors there representing over 90% of all Adaptive programs in the country.

If anyone is interested in knowing more about Adaptive Program we have at BMBW along with the 3-Trackers, let me know.

Have a safe summer, get those bikes out!

Thanks Joe, It is Scott King here.

I guess my original post was concerning the 17 alpine instructors last year. I don't think that is nearly enough to sustain us into the future if the school program keeps growing. I know we have various advertisements during the season, but we need to get this into skiers minds in the early fall so we don't lose the interest over the summer months. I thought that maybe we could get flyers into the local colleges and high schools in September and this may drum up more interest from the cash strapped students who need to make money over the winter. If we hand out flyers at the open house, why couldn't we hand these out at the colleges as well?

PS - congratulations on the Adaptive work, you'll have to fill me in come the fall. Have a fun & safe summer.

Hi Scott K,

I agree that 17 new instructors per year will not sustain the need, especially withe the turnover of instructors we experience every year.

Your idea about getting the info/flyers to the colleges in the fall is a good one.

I believe Jen had been posting information regarding being an Instructor at Kent. we seem to be getting new instructors from Kent.

I do not know if anyone is posting anything at Akron, CSU, John Carroll, BW, etc.

If anyone in the trainer group is active at any of these colleges, maybe they can advise the best way to let the students know about being an instructor.

Regards,

Joe

Hi,

Here are a couple ideas building on Gregg's thoughts.

Do videos and post them to MySpace. Edit the movies in iMovie because it's SIMPLE! We can all set up MySpace accounts to watch the videos. No CD's to make and distribute!

Set up a mentoring program especially in Park & Pipe to groom new instructors especially for freestyle. Have instructors keep the same school groups for at least a season and maybe four or five. Make going back to "the old ways" of having one school for the whole season an option - especially in the parks.

Cheers,
Doug

Hi all,

Hope you had a good summer and are looking forward to the coming year - some big changes coming, I'm sure. We "spoke" earlier about getting info sheets out to the local schools early enough to get students involved and I was wondering how we go about this? Many College students do not know about BMBW and we should be posting want-ads at the schools, especially for alpine instructors. Can we get something "official" from BMBW to post by September? I can do the Tri-C western Campus and Baldwin Wallace as they are fairly close to me. Also, what about high schools, do we solicit alpine instructors enough through them? They are ripe with boarders, but the alpine kids never seem to know about instructor opportunitues.
On another note, have we thought about junior instructors? I know BMBW has had them in the past, but what about having 14 - 16 year old kids participate in an apprenticeship program - maybe helping with the kids programs to get them started?
We are hurting for new alpine instructors and need to think about how to recruit more and keep them interested.

Just some thoughts
